Grafton Public Schools

To prepare all students to be life-long learners and responsible citizens

Welcome

The K - 6 reading department welcomes you to Grafton Public Schools’ reading department website.

Mission, Vision, Values & Goals

Mission:

The Mission of the GPS reading department is to use our knowledge and experience in reading to instruct students how to read and comprehend text so that they may become independent readers and lifelong learners.

Vision:

As reading specialists we will use research and data to improve literacy skills for students by providing appropriate, targeted instruction.

Values:

We will stay current on best practices and research, partner with colleagues and parents, use data to plan, execute, and reflect upon targeted lessons ensuring all students reach individual literacy goals.

Goals:

Set student goals and instructional plans based on data, research and best practices in order to close the reading gap and help reading students reach grade level benchmarks.

Department Structure

Currently there are 8 reading specialists working at the four elementary schools. Millbury Street Elementary School and North Street Elementary School receive Title 1 funds.

Title 1 regulations require that students are selected for additional reading support using several data points. Points are assigned to each data point, which allows us to quantifiably rank students based on need. Students receiving reading support have multiple areas that need strengthening.

On the reading department’s web pages you will find information to support all readers. Whether your child is an avid reader,  in reading services, or could just use some extra support at home, you will find useful information on these pages.

If you have any further questions about material / information found on these web pages, please contact Lisa Rice at ricel@grafton.k12.ma.us.
