What is Phonics?
Phonics involves the relationship between sounds/letters and their spellings. Phonics instruction is the key to helping students read smoothly and understand what they are reading. It helps students to understand spelling patterns and decode words.
Grades K - 2
Teachers in Grafton use Wilson Fundations in Grades K-2 to help students understand the relationship between sounds and their spellings.
Classroom teachers often send home Fundation packets to work on a particular skill so that parents are aware of what is being taught in school.
Other suggestions for home:
- Use letter tiles or magnets to make CVC words (ie..cat, bug, jet).
- Have your child write words on a white board or paper and come up with rhymes. (bug/hug, cat/bat)
- Use wikki sticks(Wikki Stix are made of hand-knitting yarn enhanced with a microcrystalline food-grade, non-toxic wax, the kind used in bubble gum and lipstick. They do not contain latex, gluten, nor peanut or other nut oils or byproducts which makes them an ideal creative activity toy for children with allergies.)or playdough to make words. (This also helps to further develop fine motor skills)
- Find the words that have been made in books, magazines, and other types of print.
